  • You have to love race horses to fully sense this lyric. There may be other layers of meaning but the surface is about the beauty and dignity and excitement these wonderful creatures brought and bring to those who love them. alkuhn1

  • @Slanderous16 Oh it has alot to do with you. Or at least, it will.

  • freaking english prelim in like 5 days i need to kno this, reasons for attendance, afternoons and ambulance :(

  • This poem has nothing to do with war mate. It's about old age.

  • great poem. has several layers of meaning. i believe that through his careful use of miliary metaphors, Larkin invites us to regard this as a poem about war and peace rather than any equine scenario.

  • this is a wistful, sad poem. The horses are retired now, at ease, their glory days are over. They can run for joy now, or stand still if they want, in the quiet fields. No pressure, no screaming crowds, watching and laying bets. Their names will live on. The poem's message? The evening time comes in all our lives, to the winners and losers. Our life's labour over. We wait quietly for the "groom and the groom's boy" to bring us safely home

  • I had to study this stupid poem for months in Higher English.

  • Thanks - wonder what he would have made of YT?
