Steam engine Tornado 60163 passes through Tyseley station on 30/12/11. UK Railtours trip from London Paddington - Stratford Upon Avon.

60163 Tornado is a main-line steam locomotive built in Darlington, England, the first such locomotive built in the United Kingdom since Evening Star, the last steam locomotive built by British Railways, in 1960. Designed to meet modern safety and certification standards, Tornado runs on the UK rail network and on mainline-connected heritage railways. The locomotive is named after the Panavia Tornado military jet.

  • Happy New year to you. You were a long way from home. tnxrail and Sim0nTrains were also filming at Tyseley. I've asked them so I'll ask you. Know why 60163 was going slow? Barry

  • @bkendlerA4 I would speculate that the bad weather had produced rail adhesion problems, and the driver was anxious to avoid a repeat of Tangmere's failure last month. Also there was no supporting diesel.

  • @bkendlerA4 Tyseley was the only realistic spot to choose because of the train timings, daylight hours, track closure between Didcot & Oxford, and the obscure route used by Tornado. Someone with a good knowledge of the Birmingham train routes

may have found a better alternative.

  • @KINGANDCASTLE Also the heavy rain dictated that a covered location was needed. The small stations on the SOA line would be unsuitable in the rain. I did seriously consider going to "The Lakes", but I thought the chances of being stranded or lost were not worth the risk. SOA itself is OK, but the train service is very poor and a road journey would involve both the M40 and M42 which can be congested during holiday periods. The only point accessible by rail on the Tornado return trip was Tyseley.

  • So that's where the squirrel left it.

  • @MrKnowwun That's just nuts
