Vitamin D Deficiency (from the New England Journal of Medicine)

http://www.uvadvantage.org/portals/0/pdf/NEJournalofMedicine.pdf

Many people we care about aren't getting enough vitamin D. Too little vitamin D may increase risk of osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease, infectious disease, and a ton of other diseases. So make sure you're getting 800 IU of vitamin D3 a day or more!
Best wishes,
Jeff

  • Great info, it seems that fish contain at least 2 healthy nutrients (omega-3 and vitamine d) maybe thats why Eskimos survive way up north :)

By the way in the winter it is said that people get more depressed might this be related to the vitamin D shortage?

  • thanks a lot! yes, there have been theories that in the winter people get more depressed due to lack of sunlight and possibly vitamin D. i'm not quite sure how solid the data is on this, but i wouldn't be surprised if there was some connection.

  • As one could imagine, Vitamin D deficiency is a huge problem here in Finland, and, of course much has been done about it. Any kind of milk (and yoghurt), in Finland contains enough vitamin D that about 2 glasses a day, should be enough. Vitamin D and omega 3 capsules are also cheap and readily available in supermarkets. This was a very relevant and important issue you brought on. thanks.

    anyway, thats all. Peace. A.

  • hey thanks for your explanation of Finland's situation. the only thing i would add is that in the u.s., the regulation of vitamin D into milk is highly variable, with many gallons of milk not actually having the required amount of vitamin D. my concern would be that in finland, there may be similar issues as well?

  • Can you get vitamin D from a tanning bed? Can you overdose on vitamin D? Thanks for the videos

  • Thanks for your comment! you can definitely get vitamin D from a tanning bed. however, if you do so, please go over carefully with your doctor to make sure you aren't getting sunburned or skin damage. you can also overdose on vitamin D, but for most people it is very difficult. you'd have to be taking like 100,000 IU a day, from what I recall. 800 to 2000 IU, for most people, is definitely within the normal non-overdose range.

  • does your skin get vitamin d even if your not in direct sunshine, like if you go out and it's cloudy but still daylight??

  • Doctor smoke too!not only deficiency in bla bla

  • I prefer the Spray Vitamin D3, 5000IU because of the 90% absorption rate. If I take 5000IU via Spray, I absorb 4500IU. Pills only have 10-20% absorption rate through the digestive tract. If I take a 5000IU capsule/pill, I only absorb 500-1000IU. No more pills! Checkout website at vitaspray4u

  • Ever think that the standard adequate reference range for vitamins is set too high? Especially for the "it" Vitamin D of recent bombarding the media? All we need is freakin 15 mins of sun which everyone in the world gets unless youre trying to be a vampire. Who's pushing the campaign for Vitamin D deficiency? Maybe vitamin supplemental companies have started following the marketing model that pharmaceutical companies have which is advertising crap meds for nonexistent disorders.

  • i drank half a bottle of cod liver oil and it said only one tea spoon i feel fine just a little pucky feelin thats all.

  • HEY THANKS FOR MAKIN THIS VIDEO, GOOD INFORMATION

  • @kaalfoetertjie FYI, Dr. Vieth in his lecture "The Udder Truth" presents how the consumption of dairy (cow milk) products can amplify calcium loss in the human body. And I propose that this elevated loss may cause elevated Vitamin D and Calcium in the people in those regions that consume dairy products. Thoughts?

You can watch the video online just google "udderly amazing"

  • Hey, why did my doctor put me on 50,000 IU? I've never been told that anything was worng with me but this year I had a blood test and now I have to tak a pill a week for 8 weeks. 50,000 IU. Isn't that a little extreme for a first time user?
