Here is a vid of the first ten minutes of the PS1 version of Final Fantasy VII.

Though I consider this game to be completely overrated, it was truly a defining experience on the PS1 and skyrocketed RPGs into the mainstream.

I consider it to be overrated, because it wasn't my first RPG, and most of those who make such a huge deal bout this game, do it, because it was their first RPG. I started out with The Original FF on the NES, and was a huge RPG fan in the 16-bit era (the greatest era for RPGs IMO), and the same kids I used to have to defend liking RPGs too, suddenly became the biggest RPG fans in the world after FFVII hit.

You oldschool RPG fans know what I'm talking about. I can't tell you how many times I heard RPG detractors say, "You just sit there and let someone hit you, and then have to wait to hit them back. Why would anyone sit there and let someone hit them? RPGs are lame."

Then Final Fantasy VII hits, and suddenly those same people are trying to tell me what's what in RPGs. Whatever.

Don't get me wrong, I did, and still do really enjoy FFVII, but it's in no way my favorite RPG, nor is it even my favorite FF Game. My whole reason for even buying a PS1 was for FFVII, because it was the sequel to my favorite game of all time (FF III/VI depending on the version FFIII on the Snes, but in actuality FFVI). I was even a huge advocate of the game at the time promoting it like crazy to all my friends, and probably annoying the hell out of them.

However, FFVII did bring a lot of people to the RPG genre, but it also brought a new RPG fan that expected all the FMV/Pre-rendered BS, and wouldn't look at older RPGs. Seeing the 16-bit RPGs get snubbed by the new RPG fans at the time was rather annoying to me. FFVII spawned a lot of look-alike RPGs too.

To it's credit, though FFVII is overrated, it did bring RPGs into the mainstream, and that means that it created enough interest in the genre for the US to get RPG ports that probably wouldn't have left Japan. Games like Suikoden 2 (the original was on the PS1 pre-FFVII), Lunar SSSC, Lunar 2, Grandia, Tales of Destiny, and so many other great, but often overlooked RPGs on the PS1. So even though it brought negatives, it did bring a lot of positives to the genre as well.

Either way, I do think FFVII is a great RPG, and should be played by all RPG fans, but it's hardly the greatest RPG, nor the greatest game of all time IMO. It's OK if you disagree with me though. To each his own.

NOTE: You'll notice that in one of the battles I make Cloud hit himself. I forgot that that wouldn't raise hit limit Break meter, so basically I just made him hit himself for no reason.

  • Im 16, so the first RPG i played was FF8. I have played FF 6,7,8,9,10 and i dont find

FF6 that good and what i noticed is that from FF1-6 it was a complety different type of RPG concept maybe if i were born 5 years before 6 would be my favorite.

You cant blame people for liking FF after 6. However FF7 is "over praised"

  • @Reinhart12349 And that's exactly what happened when seven hit all the new RPG gamers came along and turned their noses up to the old RPGs, because they weren't as pretty, or filled with a bunch of overdone scripted cenematics. However the gameplay of the old RPGs is second to none, and so is the charm.

  • the people speaking and jabbering about this game being overrated, i just wanna ask how you can complain about a masterpiece of game like this? rubbish fools!

  • Because it wasn't the first RPG I had ever played, and chances are it was yours.

Because it wasn't as good as FFVI, and yet it gets hyped by all the new FF fans who came in at FFVII as being the greatest RPG of all time when it's not even the best FF game out there.

Yes the game was groundbreaking in some aspects, but from a gameplay and story standpoint, it's hardly the greatest RPG ever, and the real problem is that it's hyped as the greatest RPG ever.

  • Heh, you made Cloud cut himself

  • I was trying to boost his limit break meter, but I forgot that it wouldn't work, so I just made him pummel himself for no reason.

  • @TheNintenguy I think ya had to be there to understand. I wasn't, but i've heard many strange reasons. None of which i remember.

  • Why is FF7 so groundbreaking for its time in some areas? nothing was that groundbreaking at all to be honest =/...Don't kill me :3.

  • Final fantasy 7 is so overrated, i mean come n some things in it were just badly done.

  • This was actually my 2nd FF My first was ff6 I think FF7 could of been alot better then it was the story is good but poorly executed & not enough development of the villians there are other ps1 games that came out like xenogears that did it alot better. FF7 was good for the time but the hype for it should of died out most of the game u are chasing Jenova or collecting materia the older games did not limit u 2 that & were still great. FF7 is a good game but not a great one. Most overrated rpg!

  • this game was my first rpg i believe and now playing other games even out of the series there are a bunch of games that would cream this one. i don't care how much people loved cloud or sephiroth. i hated them. sephy didn't have character or personality whilst all cloud did was mope and whimper throughout the game. you could easily say that kefka is better than sephiroth in terms of villainy AND it proves that just because a person has a big sword, doesn't necessarily mean he's the "best" :P

  • I like novelty stuff with new ways to make the game better, but i also like the my characters to be emotional and the gameplay to be good.

In ff7+ the games got worse and worse in that aspect.

FF8 for an example with 4 disks.

I loved parasite eve, why? cause it was the first time i had ever had the option to tune my weapon and it was not by turns, instead you moved around and shoot the enemy.

I still like it as a game,i even enjoy parasite eve 2
