@i3i2ian ggpo has no input lag but the screen itself lags. sure if you press forward the parry time will be right on but how would you know if the uppercut looks like it's on the other side of the screen to you?
You and me both, man. I got my start with Street Fighter a year ago. At first, I used my keyboard, but wanted to get the full experience. Trust me when I say it's most definitely worth the money for a stick. My suggestion is to get a cheaper stick to learn with. The Mayflash USB/PS2 stick is a good example. In my case, I went from a crappy Honcam (for six months) to the Madcatz TE I have now. I didn't want to spend big bucks on the TE and not know how to use it.
I've seen people play complex fighting games on the D-pad on a PS controller with success, so I wouldn't say it's impossible. I use the Joypad myself though.
I haven't used the stick a whole lot, but I did not like playing fighting games with it. It felt wierd to use my whole hand to clumsily move around my character, when I can simply use my thumb for the same work while having two other buttons for the same hand.
But a lot of people say stick is better. I think you should try it.

I hate how people think ggpo lag is "ok" for third strike
even a NANO SECOND of lag is too much, esp when literally every. single. frame. counts.
sf3 is the most technical fighting game ever made.
GGPO just wont cut it
no hit confirm, no tech throws, AND FORGET ABOUT PARRYING

@Matt101Vgettio GGPO lag. A lot of lag tactics on display, decent players though.

I using logitech controllers (precision and action) with ps2 console. They have classic floating d-pad - very comfortable and highly precise.
However fight stick would be the best choice for any fighter.
