Ubuntu Gutsy has Compiz Fusion built-in and runs flawlessly on a Macbook. This video demonstrates some of the eye-candy available with Desktop Effects. Keyboard shortcuts are included.

OS X Leopard is now available. Does anybody care?

A high quality version of the video can be downloaded here:

  • the background sound, that's from the first commercial of apple right? the one with the dude looking girl running with a sledge hammer and climaxes with her throwing it on this uber big screen.

  • Yep. That's the one. That ad was revolutionary. The recent rash of "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials are just stupid, inaccurate and annoying (both OSX and Windows computers are Personal Computers).

  • That looks really good! im running a black macbook, with quad boot, and was wondering if you have any links on instructions on how to instll compiz, as uv done? that would be really good if i could get some direction. (newish to ubuntu) thankx :)

  • Check comment #4 on the blog article I did. The link is in About this Video.

  • What are you getting out of this graphical user experience really? Cube rotation, squiggly windows, and bouncy, flaming, liquid, sparkly, flashy icons do what exact? OS X gives you the most beautiful interface, the most elegant and--here is the most important--the most practical. Besides appealing to your inner gamer, what do viscous dialog boxes give you? I mean, besides a headache.

  • It gives you choice. If you want to spice up your computer with some desktop effects, there are many to choose from with Compiz Fusion and they are all very configurable. Likewise, it is just as easy to turn them all off if you are more concerned about battery life. I think most Mac users understand the importance of aesthetics.

  • That's nice and all. But with Apple's new Mac OS X Boot camp you can have both OS's on just that one computer. You run Mac OS X and Ubuntu with no problems. I like Both OS's. I just hate Windows.

  • super= Windows button

  • Sry but what button is the "super"-button?

  • The first question realy makes sense... I was asking if you can have all the compiz-fusion effects ont this MacBook simply because this MacBook (I have the same, it's a old one know) is not very powerfull (in terms of graphic card...).

Everybody knows that you can run Linux on a Mac and I didn't ask that...

But tanks again (for trying your best)

Best regards and have a good one!

  • HI, first question does not make sense but i wil try me best. You can have Linux on a mac yes, you can see that (the idea of video). No you cannot have these effects through VirtualBox or Parellel or Bootcamp YET. But you can use a Live CD (Linux on a CD booting up from RAM not your hard drive, or on the other hand you can install it on your hardrive and dual boot with mac or windows or all three.

  • Hi,

Can you tell me if you can have all the compiz-fusion effects on this MacBook?

And can you have these effects trough VirtualBox or Parallel or only if you boot to Ubuntu with Boot Camp?

    Thanks

  • damn, when I get my laptop, i'm going to have SO MUCH fun with this!

  • hey !! great video !

would it be possible to tell me where to get this wallpaper please?

    ( I really liked it)

  • And I thought I was going to hell.

    ;)
