After recently having received a beer mail package where one of the bottles was broken, it occurred to me that there are no instructional videos on how to properly prepare, package, and ship beer. I do quite a lot of beer trading and I often find the other person doesn't always do a proper job packaging the beer they send me (with some notable exceptions, of course).

If you've never mailed beer before, this video should be a helpful tutorial for you. If you HAVE mailed beer and/or if you have any better ideas or methods, please say so in the comments section, or even make a video response. Help prevent beer breakage during shipping!

NOTE: This video is part one of what is now a 2-part series (with a possible third to come). In the second part I show a few more tips on how to package and protect the beers and some do's and don'ts of videoing beer mails.

  • This is great...my one question is whether this is technically legal to do so...is it?

  • @timtwoface technically the post office won't ship alcohol if you tell them it's alcohol. Whether or not it's a criminal or civil penalty is for the lawyers to sort out. I honestly cannot see any D.A. going after someone for mailing beer - it's extremely difficult to prove. If you were running a mail order brewery out of your house, though....

  • Nice.

  • +1 donosborn. You need to pad the bottom of the box better. Use a thick Sunday newspaper since weight isn't a major factor with a Flat Rate box or the assorted bubble wrap for the bottom instead of the top. Bubble wrap the entire bottle including the bottle bottoms. The necks & tops are suspended, so they only need to be protected from impact directly on the cap with side box padding. Pad the top of the box too, but the need for address visibility will keep the box upright most of the time.

  • cool video, however i would recommend rubberbands rather than scotch tape around the bottles because it allows the recieve to reusue your bubble wrap for future packages, some times tape rips the bubblewrap when its taken apart rendering it almost useless (except for stuffer).

also anotehr really good method is putting there beer into there own padded envelope that are free by request from both fed ex and usps. they are truly magical

  • I'm glad you made this video. what is the most frequent cause of broken or damaged merchandise?

  • how much does bubble wrap cost?

  • Good video. Thanks!

  • Next, I also recommend putting padding underneath the bottles. I was surprised you did not do this but your method must work for you. I also like to pad around the sides of the bottles so they aren't usually hitting the side of the box (you do this in vid #2 I see). Otherwise, your method will work even if the bags around each bottle aren't completely necessary. Also, " west-vel-tarian" = "west-va-let-er-en" thanks and cheers.

  • I will post this on both vids. Chad, thanks for doing this. There should be some videos on YT for this. There are thousands of us shipping beer, but few good videos. Yours is a good start. Few comments. Re: the Post Office. It is illegal to ship alc through them! Do not do this! It is only against policy for FedEx/UPS but not illegal.
