Severe Tropical Cyclone Hamish weakened to a category three system this morning less than 200km off Fraser Island but damaging winds, abnormally high tides and dangerous surf are still possible. A Severe Weather Warning is still in force for coasts and islands from the north of Fraser Island to Coolangatta despite the cancellation of the existing Cyclone Warning and Watch.
Even though Hamish has weakened today, seas and swells are still up to about six metres off Fraser Island and five metres at Rainbow Beach on the Sunshine Coast. At 1pm this afternoon winds reached 95km/h at Cape Moreton, on Moreton Island just off the Brisbane coast.
In the cyclone's life the strongest wind gust recorded was 190km/h on Sunday at Creal Reef, about 200km northeast of Mackay. The strongest gust on the mainland was on Monday at Double Island Point, just south of Fraser Island, peaking at 93km/h. Winds near the centre of the cyclone are likely to have exceeded 250km/h when Hamish was at his most intense.
