That was the point (and he asked every Black friend, who, when they heard the context, gave their hearty approval), to mock the casual racism. Remember the scene where the mayor of Rock Ridge says "we'll take the n****rs and the chinks, but no Irish?. He laughed at every ethnic group, made all of them the butt of a joke (or tow or three), to show viewers how stupid it all was.
