19th Century Paintings...

Johann Heinrich Füssli - Horseman Attacked by a Giant Snake
Vincent Van Gogh - Starry Night
Albrecht Altdorfer - View of the Danube Valley near Regensburg
William Turner - Light and Color
Ricardo Falero - Departure of the Witches
Hans von Aachen - Allegory
William Blake - The Lovers' Whirlwind

Robert Schumann's piano music was directly influenced by the prevailing artwork, literature and poetry of the day. The best way to learn piano music of the 19th century, and the best piano teacher is to study these masterpieces alongside regular piano practice.

Many of the paintings above were painted after Schumann's Fantasy pieces were actually written (1837) but can still serve as a direct inspiration to understanding his work.

"Traumes Wirren" (Whirling Dreams) is the second last piece of the cycle and portrays the struggle between the passions and dreams within Schumann.

Enjoy this recording! .

  • Great piece and great playing, but far to difficult for an amateur like me...

  • An excellent recording of "Fantasiestücke" with great visual illustrations, why so little reaction??
