Filmed over 18 months, the 'Growing Up Gay' production team followed the lives of six young people and, in the process, captured the challenging and even hostile experiences which lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people face in their everyday lives. The series also looks to explore the more universal experiences of growing up - from the ups and downs of life at home and at school, to friendships and falling in love. By presenting the human stories behind labels such as 'gay' or 'lesbian', the series looks to alleviate the stigma surrounding various expressions of sexual identity.
'Growing up Gay' is directed Aoife Kelleher (No Frontiers), produced by Anna Rodgers (Today is Better than Two Tomorrows) with John Murray as executive producer. The series' director of photography is Richard Kendrick (Cromwell in Ireland) and it is edited by Colm O'Brien (DIY Dads)
The Series was Broadcast on RTE 1 in April 2009.

life and being gay in ireland, well its not a bed of roses for all of us, thats a given!! the key things to is to sir round your self with people that care about you. and there is a great suport network in ireland today. how you think about your self matters greatly to the out come of your life. there is a great song call beutiful people by chris brown, lisen to the words and do not be so moved by what others think about you!! and become all that you can be and indeed be free. well done to all.

this is just great.... seeing so many supportive parents and somany people comfortable with their sexuality... its quite a breathtaking experience.... i really liked the story about Patrick and his dad.... that felt truly amazing
