Elvis Presley Hound Dog
Written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Elvis recorded it July 2, 1956 at RCAs New York City studios. It was the first song on which the Jordanaires were used. Take #31 was selected for release. It had a 28-week stay on Billboards Top 100 chart, peaking at #2 at three weeks. It was #1 for 3 weeks on the Country Juke Box chart and #1 for 1 week on the Rhythm & Blues chart. It peaked at #2 in England. It sold over six million copies in 1956 alone. Elvis sang this song on the Milton Berle Show on June 5, 1956 and cause such a commotion with his lower hip action that when he performed on the Steve Allen Show on July 1, 1956, they forced him to tone it down and wear a tuxedo and sing the song to an actual hound dog. It was the first time Elvis had ever worn a tuxedo. The pictures in this video are from both of those performances, but this is the studio recording. It is available on many CDs, including King of Rock n Roll: The Complete 50s Masters, Elvis Golden Records Vol. 1, and Elv1s 30 #1 Hits.
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
cryin' all the time.
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
cryin' all the time.
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
and you ain't no friend of mine.
When they said you was high classed,
well, that was just a lie.
When they said you was high classed,
well, that was just a lie.
You ain't never caught a rabbit
and you ain't no friend of mine.
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
cryin' all the time.
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog
cryin' all the time.
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
and you ain't no friend of mine.
You aint nothing but a hound dog
the only KING that can beat a JOKER card.
