Self-Correcting, Independent Phonogram Reading Work

This 6-year-old has been practicing writing words with the "ai" phonogram. Now he is trying to read words that use that phonogram. The word labels are printed in black but the "ai" phonogram is printed in red, to isolate the sound combination. He places the word label beneath each picture and then uses the control card to check his own work. Notice how he is able to correct his own errors without comment or guidance from the adult and see how excited he is to find the match for the mail cards. Not only is he independently practicing his reading skills and building his reading vocabulary, he's also seeing that he is capable. He can read without any help at all. And, if he makes an error, he can fix it himself. Wonderful!
