Inauguration of the Spanish European presidency

President Barroso, along with the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, and the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Joaquín Almunia, met today in Madrid with the Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, to discuss the subjects which will be high on the agenda of the Spanish presidency of the European Union in the coming months. The main subjects of the working meeting were the preparation of the informal European Council meeting on 11 February, which should give a boost to the EU 2020 Strategy on economic recovery, climate change and implementation of the Lisbon Treaty. An inauguration ceremony for the Spanish presidency of the European Union will take place on the evening of 8 January in Madrids Royal Theatre.
