A Dorian would be A-B-C-D-E-F#-G-A. A Major or Ionian is A-B-C#-D-E-F#-G#-A. To get A Dorian from A Major, you would flat the 3rd and and the seventh. To get B Dorian, which is the Dorian of the Key of A Major, you would simply play the same notes of A Ionian, but from B-B, so: B-C#-D-E-F#-G#-A-B.
great lesson thanx.i think im getting my head round modes gradually!do i understand then, that to get dorian in say..key of A ,i just sharpen the sixth note of the a major scale??
