A WTVT, Fox13 investigative reporter might have some explaining to do to his managers and corporate legal department after the promotion for his investigative report began running even though he knew the report was still incomplete and a response from the target of the report was forthcoming.

That promotion may have cost Smith a critical interview because reps for Lance Whitney and Whitney Enterprises saw that mistake as breech of ethics and pulled the plug on providing any detailed answers, sending a general statement to the TV station instead.

"Lance Whitney planned to answer your specific questions. But when the promotion for the investigative report began airing before he even had a chance to provide you with his responses, it became abundantly clear to him that you have no intention to present a fair and balanced report," wrote Glenn Selig, Whitney's public relations representative in a statement. "A target of an 'investigation' should not be an afterthought or added at the last minute."
