IBM jStart Emerging Technologies team discusses how Web 2.0 introduces new challenges to telecom companies. New breed of competitors have begun encroaching on what was traditionally considered the domain of telecom operators. Embracing Web 2.0 technologies, principles and concepts can actually help telecoms capitalize on their current strengths and seize new business opportunities. Local awareness, established consumer relationships (including billing) and a reliable communication services can be better exploited. The first step is to surface core data and services. Exposing APIs and making widgets available enables telecoms to add value in an open content economy. Mashup solutions are an attractive option to empower new classes of internal and external users to construct new services or customize existing ones cost-effectively.
