The Siege of Leningrad, also known as the Leningrad Blockade was a prolonged military operation by the German Army Group North and the Finnish Defence Forces to capture Leningrad in the Eastern Front theatre. It started on 8 September 1941, when the last land connection to the city was severed. Although the Soviets managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city on 18 January 1943, the total lifting took place on 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began. It was one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history and the most costly in terms of casualties.

We loved the video, it is really very very interesting. Thank you so much for posting it.

  • Thank you for the video. It is not possible to see these records without trains. My grandmother survived the Blockade of Leningrad. She lost her sisters and brothers there...

But I still feel pain when I walk through modern St.Petersburg and still see old people with Blockade Medals on their shabby clothes starving in powerty and at the same time luxirious cars gleaming and driving in the lights of Nevsky Prospect...

  • @TheChairmaker you are so retarded.

  • @prettypillpopper No, you don't. If you've really read what it was like, then you don't. No sane person can want to be part of that.

If you don't believe me, try living on 200 grams of bread a day for a week.

  • I'm currently reading a trilogy of books that begin on the day that Germany invaded Russia and tells the story of a young girl living in the Leningrad Blockade. I can't even begin in describe how much the story of the war and how Russia coped has touched my heart. It makes me want to visit so badly and as silly as it sounds, I wish I had been there at the time.

  • Соболезную тогдашнему Ленинграду!!! Вечная память погибшим,умарившимся,оголодавшимся!!!

Жаль,что сейчас Питер ассоциируется только с Врагами Народа!!!

  • Бес слез глядеть нельзя

  • My mom survived all 900 days of the siege of Leningrad. She was buried under the ruins of building of a 3 day. When they found her, her hair was all grey at her 26. There were no rats: luxury like that disappeared very quickly. They boiled soils from the shoes...

I see familiar buildings, many of them... Summer garden, Petrogradskaya storona...

My mom stand high when the siege was broken... She said everyone kissed and hug strangers... Slava Vam, Leningradtsu!

  • Слава ленинградцам!

  • Мои бабуля и дядя провели почти всю БЛОКАДУ в Питере....Помню,Люблю....!!!!!!!!!!!!
