Clumsy Horse+Mud=Fall

Jake is fine, I'm okay.

The ground looked dry, I guess Jake managed to find a spot that had mud underneath the dry stuff. So this fall is my fault for cantering a vertically challenged horse in sloppy terrain...I know no need to tell me. (Vertically challenged=Jake leans pretty hard to the inside while bending)

The reason why Jake does not attempt to get up is because he is waiting for me to tell him to get up. He wasn't hurt, or anything else...just waiting. I guess that is the advantage of teaching a horse to lay down (There ARE disadvantages...that comes in the next video hehe) But it means that he didn't trash while my leg was underneath him, or that he didn't step on me while trying to get up.

He is worth his weight in gold.

Yeah, its so much easier to make sure he is okay and untangled while he is still down before he tries to get up.

Wow, Caiti, don´t play it down: "I am ok" is not right, as you must have had a shock and were limping until the end. But you show, how tough you are, physically fit and mentally strong enough, to deal with such an adventure. Good girl!

Jake was certainkly shocked too - but he was wonderful remaining calm, no panic - just waiting for you to tell him what to do. You were his mum to console her little boy.

How did you finish that story? Walking and talking with him? Riding again?

@heinzstoffregen Compared to what could have happened we both were okay. I jammed my wrist and it hurt, but nothing that was fine within a week. Well I walked him around for a while making sure he was doing alright, then got back on and did one lap at a walk around the arena and got off and call it a day.

omg i would have been terrified! the ground wasnt too muddy though, jake was really leaning to the inside so much that he wasnt able to get his legs out from under him. you can do some 'stand up' exercised with him by lifting whichever rein you want him to bend his neck to and crossing it so your hand just passes the middle of his neck and fluff with both legs making sure he really stands up.

@razrbladefaerie I was actually working on it in this clip. Right before this fall I remember I had bumped with an out side leg, and had asked him to pick his shoulder up. A stride after he picked himself up he leaned hard right into this part.

Yeah its not fun. I didn't even have time to try and get out of the saddle. I blinked and I was on the ground. lol

Dang! That happened to me the other week. I was cantering my POA bareback and we fell and she smashed my leg. It was scary! Hope you were both okay.

@HondaThoru Yeah, its a habit that I actually didn't teach into him too much. Before I taught him to lay down we had a few accidents where Jake ended up on the ground, (The bridle broke and he tried jumping over a barbwire fence, pulled back in crossties and fell) Both times once he was on the ground he stayed there. Pretty scary cause we had no way of getting him up for around 20 minutes. Luckily know with teaching him to lay down, he gets up when asked.
