know more about this promising trio in this interview
MTTM: What can we expect from your debut album Covered in Dust?
Kindest Lines: A very personal album for the three of us. Brittany's lyrics are true stories. Justin and I have been friends since we were little kids and it's been great working with him for the last year and few months. It's dreamy, textured, dancey and loud.
MTTM: You've got a bonus track that's only available on the physical CD, is this a statement against the shift to digital?
Kindest Lines: Kinda sorta. I don't like the whole digital thing. An album is a work of art. It has to be seen as well as heard and held as well as listened to.
MTTM: Your sounds is quite electronic, is this emulated in your live performances?
Kindest Lines: Yes what you hear on the album is what you get 100% live. We will be adding a live bass player soon just to give it some extra oomph live. We originally intended to be a full band but we decided while writing that there was no point in trying it any other way because we were already happy with it. Justin and I actually started writing the compositions on guitars and an acoustic drum kit. He's an amazing and very tasteful drummer.
MTTM: On your Facebook page, you describe your musical genre as 'dreamsynthpop(?)'. Can you expand on this further? Do you feel it's quite difficult to constrain your music to one specific genre?
Kindest Lines: We put that as kind of a statement on labels. In my opinion, 'Covered in Dust' is ten songs that are very different and stand out on their own. I hate labels with a passion. It just makes it too easy to pigeonhole things. It's an easy way out. I think people should try and be more descriptive... conversations don't hurt.
MTTM: Hailing from New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill, do you feel your music has been influenced from these tragic events?
Kindest Lines: Not at all. We are the same people we were before that we are now. It's horrible, all the bad luck our city has had. The music and lyrics, I feel more or less reflects the three strong personalities in this band. Anyway, there is a lot more to Louisiana than tragedies and drinking.
MTTM: How do you work together to create a song? Do you all pitch in with the music and lyrics?
Kindest Lines: Well for the batch of songs that ended up becoming the album, Justin or I would come up with a part (a synth line, guitar part, etc) and build around it. Everybody writes their own parts but we give each other very harsh criticism which sucks sometimes but you have to be honest with one another.
MTTM: As a band, do you all have different influences? How do you combine these to gel as one group?
Kindest Lines: We all enjoy different types of music, but as I said earlier, we have three very strong personalities and a lot of integrity between us. What makes it gel together is listening to one another and most importantly, we never set out to sound a certain way -- it just happens naturally but we keep ourselves limited to the instruments we're using- two synths, a guitar and a drum machine.
MTTM: Do you have any plans to play any shows in the UK?
Kindest Lines: There are no concrete plans yet. I need to get my passport though...so I'll get back to you on that! But if you'll have us, we'd love to come!
