they didn't say they were going to be friends. he said "just friends. i get it," as in "I understand from what you were saying (before i kissed you) that you don't like me like that." the kiss said "but you might surprise yourself. I think you actually do like me like that." and when she kissed him in front of the elevator, that was her saying "you're right. i think we have something here."
