Miraculously preserved over the centuries, its artistic importance was unrecognized until an essay by J. R. R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings) revealed its unity and multi-dimensional structure. Beowulf is now regarded as the most important manuscript the Anglo-Saxons have handed down to us, of immense linguistic as well as poetic value.

This program sets out to trace the origins of the tribes that brought this epic into being, the war-like Northmen from Sweden, Denmark and Germany who were to conquer and settle regions of a more clement and fertile island that would become known as England, named after the tribe of the Angles. Using 3-D animation, location footage, archive materials and interviews, the Beowulf epic is examined in the light of the civilization that created it. It investigates their religious beliefs as well as their everyday life, and suggests that, old as the poem is, it may have roots in an even more ancient fertility cult.

  • its funny that it is now rascist or backward to be proud of your anglo-saxon heritage. We'll I'm damn proud of it.

  • WrestlingMozfan are u some kind of fucking idiot?

Oh that's right...the white races aren't allowed to learn about their history....that would be racist. Only non-white peoples have the right to that.

  • @aswightman Yeah, there's nothing wrong with being proud of your race: there is a big difference between that and being racist. I'm damn proud of my Norwegian and German heritage.

  • @cymaticman the idea was: the going was storytelling history spelling RE(LI)GION "...and they have god arrested in a house of gold" and they nail him on a cross and they m/eat him alive and drink his blood a must see for everyone free to believe = to face faith = no(t) (f)ear only (fire&eyes ;-)

  • Although it is sad that that became their culture in absence of all but poverty.

I’m not saying that the Vikings were any better than the churches; they developed into the capitalists of their time, and when able to, changed from their subsistent lifestyle to living in excess through plunder. Their murderous ways though were also just a by-product of their environment:they were starving and so raided cities and stole from those who had resources to survive, it’s human nature in that sort of situation.

  • @cymaticman

You're not wrong, but do you seriously think that it's a pity that the corrupted church of the day, which committed despicably heinous acts of violence, rape, lying and theft against humanity, had their establishments of sin pillaged and burned by the poor men of the North who didn't have the fertile lands to survive in Scandinavia and so to live they came down and took from the houses of gold, which are contradictory to Christian doctrine, so that they could feed their families?

  • The old Germanic/Northern/Saxon society sounds very Spartan. All men were also warriors. As it should be in a strong society.
