nothing wrong with becoming popular. the problem is is that when they become popular they leave everything that got them there in the gutter. imagine if greenday took their fame and used it to play real punk music and really just beat the shit out of people with some raw punk. that would be amazing even if they were popular. but they don't and instead choose to write rock operas and ballads. rancid is ok never been a a huge fan but i would agree that they aren't as bad as greenday.

@Tim010987 not necessarily because that type of thinking would allow the brittney spears and biebers of the world to be punk because they are doing what they want. you can't nix the "idea" of punk, because it's the essence. the diy attitude, the fight for the underdog attitude,the fuck the system attitude this is what spilled over into the music. without the "idea" of punk there would be no punk only bullshit. also punk isn't a free pass to be a dick so it's not all about whatever YOU want.
