Renowned sci-fi author Ray Bradbury - who penned classics such as The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheint 451 - appeared at Long Beach's most famous bookstore, Acres of Books, on Wednesday to talk about what makes the store so great and why it should be spared. Acres of Books was sold to the city of Long Beach so that the land can be redeveloped, but Ray is having none of that. He explains his love of the store and promises to call the Mayor, also dropping words of writing wisdom along the way.

  • Generous, brilliant, profound, tender and a delight of a man. I did a fundraiser for a local library with him in 1993....all HIS idea. So beloved, such a joy to read and listen to. Love him to pieces. Long live Dandelion Wine!

  • Robin Williams is the grandma from the background

  • the best day of my life would be the day i could give ray bradbury a big hug. i love him so much.

  • Bradbury's right about the smell. One thing too that's gone is the stores that were both book & tobacco. Books, newspapers, and the smell of pipe tobacco. I also miss the "oldness" of those old book stores; the kind where the wooden stairs would creak as you went to another level.

Barnes & Noble and Borders can't match that experience.

  • Lol, their politics stink everybodys head got cut off lol.

  • The mayor of Long Beach ought to pull his head out of his a-s and listen to Mr. Bradbury. RB is 100% right. A store like that adds character to a town. Why does this country hate books so much? Please, Long Beach, listen to RB!

  • Bradbury's wit is still intact...
