Consuming Women (Women as Consumers) (ca. 1967)

I'm at a bit of a loss on this one. I suppose it was created to help sales people target women consumers, but I have no idea how it would be useful. This is a Jam Handy film, which explains the slick, surreal production. The various scenes are played very over-the-top by the same actress, but a strangely paradoxical ending comes when she is finally shown as the film's ideal - handing over money to an out-of-shot person, and being given a gift-wrapped item. She walks toward the camera looking at the ground and wearing a saddened, almost disillusioned face; a strange look for a consumer in a consumerist short.

I recently read the book Mad Women which is about women working in advertising during the 1960s to present. It says the 60s & 70s were turning points where many agencies that viewed the customer as an idiot started to go out of business. Most women at the time were only allowed to work on certain ad projects. No car or credit card ads; mostly soaps and feminine products.
