you go back to ten points because the lowest double you can finish on is double 1 which is 2 points... if you hit more than 10 for example or leave yourself on 1 point, this is known as going bust ... and you return to 10 points again in this case.

however in certain circumstances people intensionally bust themselvs if there are on double 1 with a dart left and the orgional double, was double 4 as this is seen as an easier double to hit because if you hit a single 4 then you hae double 2
