Agreed, most pre-modern-tonal music (rough term, I mean >1760-70) has a tendency to open with a root followed by first inversion, so in this case indeed G-Bb-C

I love this! I opened my senior organ recital with this piece; I agree the fact that Buxtehude wrote in tablature always need to be considered.

There are tons of versions it is up to us to look at all the different copies of the tablature. Not to mention we can never know for sure as We have none of Buxtehude's original tablatures because none exist anymore. There are all tiny things that differ from copy to copy.... We can never really know

I've noticed this too. I have heard it played both ways.  My music (Dover Edition) has it written as G G C...etc. so I don't really know. Anybody out there know how it's written in other editions, say, C. F. Peters, or others?

hello mister, i m an organist too, and so i can say you this is G Bb , peters is not a good edition!! the best is Barenreiter and breitkopf...i have this tunes of Buxtehude in Breitkopf...no problem...G Bb at the pedals..and it's more beautiful

i love this prelude....
