The Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major, composed by Franz Schubert between 1814 and 1815, is a wonderfully assured work for Schubert who was eighteen years old by the time he composed it.

Unfortunately, this Symphony was first performed in public fifty years after Schubert's death.

There are four movements:
I. Largo - Allegro vivace
II. Andante in E flat major
III. Menuetto: Allegro vivace in C minor - Trio in E flat major
IV. Presto

Opening with an arresting slow introduction, the first movement Largo - Allegro vivace is full of vigour and there is some beautiful work by the woodwinds to savour.

The second movement is a theme with five variations in E flat major.

The minuet is in C minor and mainly scored for the tutti and fortissimo. The contrasting Trio in E flat major is more thinly scored winds, violins and pizzicato bass. The melody of the trio is actually a variation of the theme used in the second movement forming a melodic and harmonic (E-flat/C minor) link is made between the inner two movements.

The finale recreates the joyful mood of the first movement and adds "Haydnesque" touches of humor. Occasional serious moments are soon seen off and, listening to this, one could not doubt that the musicians were enjoying themselves.

    Thank you very much.

  • Schubert was a fantastic composer. I don't know how an 18-year old could find music like this within himself, but this is indeed a great composition.

Many thanks for uploading this video. It is very nice!
