Google Street View Cars Gathered Wi-Fi Data

This is a computer-generated schematic animation depicting a Google Street View car collecting unencrypted wireless network data.

Google Inc. utilizes the specially-equipped cars to take panoramic photographs of streets and buildings around the world for use in its Google Maps Street View interface. Google admitted recently its cars catalogued data on open, unsecured wireless networks while taking photographs, but says it did so inadvertently.

Connecticut (USA) Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, in concert with at least 29 other U.S. states, has demanded Google turn over the Wi-Fi data its vehicles have collected. Several countries have made similar demands.
