This is the Rutgers tomato that I planted last fall in my greenhouse. 9 feet tall and still going. So I'm gonna drop it down a bit, and give it room for more growth and production of some really nice tomatoes. This old girl just keeps growing and growing.

  • how's that possible from a rutgers? Was it still in a container? what did you do different? Save Those Seeds

  • @ibfrdb Theres a few different Rutgers from what I understand. This was an indeterminate, planted in-ground. I just kept it pruned back to a few stems and let it go. The commercial growers let their plants run 20+ feet a lot of times. I did save plenty of seed. :-)

  • Beautiful garden, thanks for sharing. I dream about doing exactly what you are doing. Hopefully one of these days.

  • @OkieSilverDude Thanks, just having a little fun nowadays. I feel mighty blessed to be able to do what I do each day. I hope things work out for you soon. ;-)

  • that rutgers is something else !.. how do they taste compared to others ?

my dream is to have a house like yours.. keep up the great work and videos

  • @stymye Its been quite a surprise. Taste wise, I haven't found anything to beat it yet. We're eating some of the other varieties now, checking them out. That Black Sea Man has a good taste, and the Coustralee is pretty good. Looking at the history of Rutgers, its pretty well thought of. Hard to beat for production and canning. Thx for the support !

  • @mhpgardener I was watching another vid about tomatoes saying that if you grow a hybrid tomato and replant those seeds, they'll come back as just a cherry tomato, don't know if that's true or not though, and I was reading on the burpee site about someone that was growing tomatillos next to his regular tomatoes and he was getting weird hybrid tomatoes on some of his plants, yeah you're right greenhouse tomatoes get to be a big plant, I was watching a doc on how it's made

  • Man I love your tomato plants you've done a fantastic job. Love the greenhouse unfortunately with our climate here I can't use that type of set up, but one day I will it's just going to cost me a ton to build it. We've got 9 different strains of tomatoes this year in our garden can't wait to eat some and freeze the rest for winter cooking. Take care Matt

  • @Watsamadoing lol, thx I guess size is relative. For some, it seems huge...but once you start growing in it...it seems so small ! A controlled environment is so much easier to grow in. I'm hoping I can get a bigger one built before next fall.

  • Man... I need to get me some more land.. my 700 Square metre block just isn't big enough to have an amazing greenhouse like that... Not to mention the fact that it's surrounded by trees.. time to hit the real estate websites I think :) Can't believe you are growing those behemoths in such a small bag... Going to have to go back and watch you earlier vids to see how you got started...
