  • Hexen is one of those games that id made to try and succeed the Doom series, but ultimately failed to reach anywhere near the same success as it's bigger brother. Hexen runs on an improved version of the then tried & true Doom engine, which by the time it was ported to consoles was starting to show it's age. Especially when you consider that Duke Nukem 3D & the original Quake would be released the following year.

I would describe Hexen as the love child of Doom & a game of Dungeons & Dragons.

  • @therealbluedragon I'm not sure what the hell happened to the PS1 port, it's just all kinds of wrong! For a start the colors are weird, also the textures & enemy sprites appear distorted when seen from up close. The HUD on the PS1 game seems to be stretched out when compared to the Saturn version; it's the same with the weapons too. The only real positive thing I can say about the PS1 port is that is has a comparable frame rate, which I guess is something.

  • @therealbluedragon I don`t care for age of your comment!

Heretic and HeXen series were made by Raven Software with id Software`s Doom engine.

Raven improved the engine, added new map format, map scripting to it. Jumping, poly objects, inventory system and lots of other cool stuff.

Did Raven failed? Hmm... NO! Heretic and HeXen have a fan base, but Doomers took all good from HeXen and threw it away!

Oh, and by the way... N64 port is the best one!

  • @deadfishy666 I liked your first two sentences but the second two were mad out of place. Did you click "Reply" on my comment by accident?

  • @jackrabbitslim26 Doom didn`t had jumping! It didn`t had poly objects, ambient sounds, map scripting and sooo on!

I like Doom much, but Heretic and HeXen are much better!

  • @jackrabbitslim26 Man you don`t know much! Raven Software made HeXen as a expansion for Heretic, but it expanded so beyond that it became a game of it`s own!

Only thing id has with it is the Doom Engine!

  • @deadfishy666 i like hexen, but the reason why it failed is that doom did better. want to know why? well maybe because it is BETTER. oh yeah by the way, hexen was made by id software. thought i'd let you know

  • @OwtDaftUK

What an ill informed specimen you are....the saturn could do transparencies but it was not readily available with the development tools that Sega supplied - it had to be added.

And since when do you know it was simple back in 1994 when the Saturn was created?

  • @cadmire1982

Totally agree...the developers of the day did indeed concentrate more on the Playstation as it was easier to programme for and the most likely to give more cash return

It's a shame as the Saturn had a lot more potential than was actually realised.

  • Can you even strafe in these ports?

  • @Offspringfan64 ID sells Hexen...

  • @therealbluedragon ID did not make Hexen. It makes successful games that challenge technology of the day. Every time except in Doom 2. Hexen was epic fail Doom ripoff using Doom engine. If it sucks, it probably wasn't Id. Rule of thumb.
