@Keggbert, you'll be better off finding them at night, hence they are nocturnal. During mating season, however, you can find them during the day as well. The best places to find hellbenders would be in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia areas in fast-flowing, cold streams. I study hellbenders at Clarion University of Pennsylvania where I'm swapping the skin of hellbenders in the Allegheny Drainage for the fungus chytridiomycosis, which is deadly not only to hellbenders, but to all amphibians.
