Detroit Public School officials hope to resume classes on Wednesday after fire destroyed Paul Robeson Academy on Detroit's west side early today.
"DPS will work today to determine an alternative location for Paul Robeson students to be educated, with the goal of having that implemented as early as tomorrow," the district's spokeswoman Jennifer Mrozowski said this morning.
The historic building on Fenkell near the Lodge Freeway educates students from pre-kindergarten until eighth grade.
Flames were visible from the school as plumes of thick black, gray smoke billowed over the Lodge Freeway during this morning's rush hour.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. It began around 4 a.m. and was still going strong 90 minutes later.
The Detroit Public Schools calls Robeson Academy one of its premier learning institutions. Students who enroll at Robeson must carry at least a 2.5 grade point average.
It's named in honor of the singer, actor and social activist.
