Howard Jones - No One Is To Blame 1986

You can look at the menu, but you just can't eat
You can feel the cushion, but you can't have a seat
You can dip your foot in the pool, but you can't have a swim
You can feel the punishment, but you can't commit the sin
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame

You can build a mansion, but you just can't live in it
You're the fastest runner but you're not allowed to win
Some break the rules, and live to count the cost
The insecurity is the thing that won't get lost
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame

You can see the summit but you can't reach it
Its the last piece of the puzzle but you just can't make it fit
Doctor says you're cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain
And you want her, and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her, and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame

  • yeah, sometimes life can be hard...there's that one person you wish would want to be with you as much as you want to be with them, but you can't seem to do anything about it

  • Phil Collins produced this re-recording, as well as the album "Dream Into Action" (1985) which contains the original version of this song. His analog and acoustic drums can be heard on this "remake for radio" version, which I feel is superior to the original. Phil also is singing the backup vocal on this.

  • Love this lyrics, make you feel life is so unfair...

  • @TheCapricornStrand Well, even then, there were dumbasses. The music just wasn't brain dead...

  • This guy is a very inspiring singer/songwriter for his time. it was a time you could go out and listen to music without some brain dead individuals trying to pick fights.

  • never knew who sang this...lol

  • As soon as I hear the first bars of this song, my heart begins to move.

  • @1999Mikee: The 90s weren't that bad -- there was a lot of good music out there, if you knew where to look.

I think the grunge thing started out well enough. Like most trends, it began to outlive its usefulness. The record labels were determined to drain every last cent they could out of it, and they were really reaching the bottom of the barrel.

Still - I do like stuff from the 80s -- it might be because I was in grade school when a lot of this music was on the radio. It appeals to nostalgia.

  • @tim5365 Funny how two English acts HJ and TFF hit it big wit DRUMMERS as producers!

  • @1999Mikee I agree (if anyone has doubt, just check the vids like top 100-of the 2000's where they concentrate all the awful of the last decade - just smashed together one after another in 20-30sec samples back to back and its almost intolerable and undeniably the worst decade of music in a century to start the millenium off.) You might appreciate this: watch?v=281ax7Ovlsg (muscial joke about boy bands which is ironically better than most boy band songs itself)

  • @UpRoaryus I remember those days and I'm grateful I was able to live during and listen to music of the 70s and 80s. I like the music of the 60s as well, mainly due to influences of my older brother and uncles. When 90s grunge music came into the scene along with the manufactured teenage boy groups, I was convinced music took a hard nose dive and couldn't go deeper into the pit it fell into. I was wrong. This past decade produced the worst in music and so much one minute talentless stars.

  • Remember when quite a few musicians were actually adults with something to write music about other than how much they loved to party or how hot they were? We've gone from Freddy Mercury to Justin Beiber and Mylie Cyrus. ( who seems like a sweet girl, but not a musical artist by any stretch of the imagination) Madonna is even able to to crank out stuff that fits right in with today 's pop despite being an adult, but it hasn't got even the substance of her old 80's tunes...
