The MICE Orchestra is an unprecedented ensemble formed of up to 500 mobile humans and computers. In 2008 the group included a regular performing ensemble of 180 members in the context of Matthew Burtner's Technsonics class at the University of Virginia. At this event (Digitalis 2008) over 300 people performed laptops in MICE. MICE uses robotics, algorithmic composition, network instruments, gaming, expressive human performance and artificial intelligence. Using large LAN networks of computers, MICE invites audience members to join in the creation of the music. Some members of the ensemble perform commercial and homemade computer interfaces, and others play musical instruments. Audio and data are fed into the network and become material for the emergent system.
