  • I was reading up on how to make the lime for hominy. Caveman Chemistry gives a good explanation on how to do it. However, if plain wood ash does just as well, why bother?

Have you ever made potash from your wood ash? If you have, what does it do to the hominy?

  • @michaelgill1969 My thoughts exactly on the ash, and it gives it a good flavor, too.

I've never made potash, but I have tried Red Devil Lye a few times. It cooks it a lot faster, but you have to wash the stuff like crazy.

I think ash is a lot easier and tastes better.

  • good video,Thanks .I was reading a book where this runaway slave made homniy for these girls during a blizard. I thought that homniy came from a can go figure.

  • Thank you for this! I have read a lot and am sad that information on traditional methods is not readily available. I encourage you to write a wikipedia article on this method!

  • Does the type of ash change the flavor? What ash should we use?

  • I'm glad I finally get to see how this is done! Neat-O!
