This shows how a cheap stepper-motor can be used as a generator for lighting LEDs. The shaft of the motor is chucked into the lathe, which is spinning at around 800 RPM. The camera sensor artifacts show the two LEDs flashing alternately- I hooked them up in parallel, but with their polarities crossed. I made a bike light system using this approach and it works really nicely!

  • I made some experimentation with stepper motors but for high power the servo motors are much better for generating electricity see may 1200W servo motor generator video.

  • SOOO your burning 20 amps of power from your lathe to generate 20 ma. to light an LED? Sounds good to me. Good job.

  • I use this on a home made wind turbine with light.
