Kirkee B. (aka Curt Bisquera) interviews John "JR" Robinson on DC Live. Line Directed and Cut by Ryan Poyer.
As a child, my parents played the cassette tape "Back In the High Life" on what seemed to be a daily basis. Well, that and Phil Collins "No Jacket Required." Good Times. My favorite song on that album was "Higher Love" featuring Chaka Khan on vocals and a drum track by John "JR" Robinson that will make me bob my head till I die. Trouble was, I could never figure out why Chaka and Steve were singing "Fire Log" when the name of the song was titled "Higher Love." Nevertheless, I was always stoked (pun intended) to be reminded of fond camping experiences and totally understood their desire to have another fire log.
So it was somewhat surreal to find myself Line Directing a live shoot at Drum Channel with the drummer who laid down that irresistibly funky drum track. As much as I loved hearing about the making of perhaps my favorite childhood song, I still don't know why they called the song "Higher Love." ;)
JR was on nearly every song on the radio in the 80s and 90s, and is still one of LA's first call drummers today. His resume includes Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" & "Bad", Chaka Khan "I Feel For You", Mariah Carey "Rainbow", and literally hundreds more.
