"She Was a Gardener"
By Rhiannon Morgan Matich, granddaughter
She was a gardener, a caregiver of all growing things. Whether it was children, animals, or a yard full of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, she tended to us all. We are her garden, and she was so proud of everything she had a hand in growing. Now, without her here with us, we feel vulnerable. As if we are a plant that has been pruned bare, we are in shock and pain, we are cold and bone-weary. Winter is pressing down on us and we are feeling as if Spring will never come. But we are hardy; she has seen to that. She has taken such good care of us, her tiny seedlings. She has made sure we have grown healthy and strong, given us all the light and nourishment we could ever need. It may not feel like it, but we have the ability to survive this frost. Spring will come eventually. Because of her, our roots are strong and our branches will grow back, we just have to make it through this hard time now, together, and remember everything she's taught us; to see the best possible outcomes of every struggle, to always look on the bright side, that a dark day of rain is what brings water to all things growing, and that anything can grow if you give it enough love and attention. She was our Matriarch, the very heart of our family tree. She was a gardener, and we are her garden.
