I'm happy to see this hobby is possible in the UK... Are you bothered by taxes and/or costly permits?
I got a fat fine here in Italy for panning in a wash. Yes there was gold. Just flakes for me but I'm sure there are better spots to pan there the spot I found.
Back home in Washington State, you can have a pan and a bucket with out permit. you just have to make sure you have a claim or permission from the claims owner.

There are no taxes as such here in the UK. for some areas in Scotland you need a very cheap licence.
