@o0xiahness0o no, the father in no way killed the baby. He didn't let the parson come, though the family did want the parson to come so he could give the baby a Christian baptism before it died. So he prevented it having a Christian baptism by the parson, but did not affect its health in anyway.
I know her family did wrong but her family would have been frowned upon if they found out. No one would trade with her father and the community would frown upon the family. It was very male orientated back then and women didn't really have a voice. Its sad really. I was crying my eyes out when she buried her baby. :( Evil Alec.... coming across all charming and prince-like .... >:(
Well, I s'ppose her strange family is too blame, but yeah...
Studied this last year in A level English Literature, (as well as Wilfred Owen), and I'm now doing a resit, (yes, I'm a failure lol). Instead of reading the whole novel again, this series is a helpful reminder of the plot - so thanks for the upload!
Now all I have to do is remember about 20-30 significant quotes from the book...
@kjean312 true, it just irked me that he wouldn't allow her to have someone come over and check on her sick child.

Holy.Shit.
Tess' father killed her baby....of course I may be over-exaggerating but I'm dramatic like that.
What an ass of him to do such a thing, and he blamed Tess too! Wtf is wrong with her parents?
