This song was suggested by Jalreal and Hershism.
I was going to show off and sing along but decided against it. (Imagine that)
I had never learned this song because I just couldn't get my head and hands around the bass part. It has some very odd patterns as well as ghost notes and pauses that made it a very challenging song for me to learn and play.

  • Great job! Are you playing the ghost notes in the beginning? I know they're really hard to get, I mean, since Geddy uses his thumb ;)

  • @ProgAndy

Yes, I play them with my index finger.

  • Its just shows that You are awesome and Geddy is the Man!

  • @TheShel8777

    Thanks.

It is really tricky. I couldn't imagine the horror of having to sing and play it at the same time.

  • Awesome job Mr T. Not a song that I ever really got into that much, but getting to see the complexity of the bass work has got me digging out the CD for a refresher. Cracking stuff, as usual.

  • @TJH3113 BTW that Rick is killer. I'd love to have one. Ive never really had the means to collect many basses. Actually the only bass I have right now is a custom 6 string MTD from Mike Tobias but Id love to have what you're playing there.

  • @TJH3113 Yeah it's one of those things where if you know the part so well then you can just play it without thinking, which lets you concentrate on singing. Try it out, it's really not that hard and it's fun to do once you get it down. I'm a singer but I grew up learning stuff like Dream Theater on bass and some of that stuff is so hard to sing and play at the same time. Totally different than what Ged does. Big Money is the same exact thing. Seems hard but it's really not.

  • @trenken

That makes a lot of sense, you're probably right.

  • @TJH3113 Surprisingly it's actually not hard to sing over this since the bassline is linear. It's just following a straight line with the beat so once you know how to play it, you just let your fingers go without having to think about it, and can just focus on singing.

That's how many of his more complex basslines are when he has to sing, he keeps them linear. Now if the bassline were strange and disjointed like say Dream Theater, yeah that stuff is hard to play and sing at the same time.

    Thanks a lot.
