The Extreme Mustang by Saleen Performance is known as the world`s fastest production Mustang.
This 281 ci SOHC, twin-screw supercharged beast makes 550 horsepower, 500 lb-ft torque @ 4000 rpm, and is set up with Saleen`s Racecraft suspension.
The Extreme rivals all competitors in the high performance pedigree including Corvette Z06, Ferrari 430, Porsche Carrera 911 and Dodge Viper SRT-10.

The basic idea behind the Saleen Mustang S281 that debuted in 1996 is that it doesn't look at all like a typical Mustang. The designation of the hyped-out Stang was simply...The Saleen Mustang. Changing the call sign to be identified by it's 281 cubic inches is a really cool idea. But calling it "The Saleen 281 CID" is a long name. So the model became S281, S for Saleen. The option package letter or number ordered is added to the right of the 281 completing the call sign.

2002 the most powerful production Mustang is introduced, S281 Extreme with 445 Horsepower.
There are only 62 Saleen Mustang S281s for 2002.

2003 Saleen S281-E there were only 14 street legal version of the GT road-racing series SCCA Extremes made this year. Rated at 445 horsepower 450 ft-lbs.

2004 produces a mindboggling 445 horsepower at 6,000 rpm with maximum torque of 450 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm.

2005 was the pinnacle of the Saleen Mustang S281 Extreme line up to that year with an asphalt smashing 500 Horsepower, 480 ft-lbs. of torque.
The only thing the 2005 has in common with the earlier models is the S281 Saleen Extreme name and the 4.6L 90-degree V8 engine. But, this year the Extreme receives an all aluminum block.
The 281 becomes Extreme by tearing down the engine, reassembling into the Saleen high revving 4.6-liter powerplant..

The wheelbase is longer by 6 inches and the wheels are closer to the corners too improve overall handling and balance. The nose of the car is lighter for better weight distribution at 3,549 lbs overall. Same size brakes used on the 200mph Ford GT. It's pretty damn fast too...4.5 seconds from 0 to 60 and quarter mile numbers of about 12.1 seconds at 117 mph.

The 2006 Saleen Extreme is the fastest production S281 built by the company up till that year.
A face belting 550 horsepower at a rocket blasting 500 ft-Lbs. 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds with quarter mile numbers of about 12.5 seconds. Top speed of 165 mph. Overall weight at 3606 lbs.

The 2006 Saleen Extreme isn't too much different form the 2005 except for power upgrades, some ornamentation and creature comforts.

The 2006 Saleen Extreme is indeed a rare site on the street or anywhere else really. But not to worry. You can see it by checking out the video and hanging out with the owner for a bit

You will see a couple of saleens around but most of them are not the SC they are stock Saleens which are basically just the body kit and to see an actual extreme it is really rare because they are a little over a hundred made each year
