    Yes, but their party was called the Democratic-Republican Party. A Republic and a representative democracy aren't all that different reallly. The problem is the US have redefined words like Democracy, Socialism, Communism, Atheism etc. to all mean lack of freedoms. Yet places that have more socialism, atheism are often ranked higher on freedoms then the US. Australia, Canada , Norway etc. are just some.
