Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Not as good as the book, but still worth watching.

  • Freddie Jones as Inspector Baynes was the best performance in this one, and that's saying a lot when you're opposite Jeremy Brett. Superb and surprising.

  • brett's personal struggle made him relate to holmes even deeper as an actor, making his character interpretation of sherlock holmes sharp. He was really submersed into holmes, even in the smallest moments when he doesn't speak his line. his very presence just invokes it.

  • Holmes!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • to be honest, I think sherlocks character possibly had a touch of asbergers. think about it. the coldness or sterility in relationships, the brilliance, the particular sensitivity to details and things absorbed through the senses.

the author, conan doyle did base his character on an actual doctor that he worked with for a time so I think it's entirely possible that he was unknowingly describing more then just a personality type.

  • thanks for posting!

  • @jlovebirch To be fair, the early episodes were pre-diagnosis with bipolar. The later episodes, he had started getting treatment. It wasn't so much theatrical style as much as a rampaging brain chemistry.

  • If they made these again, Sherlock wouldn't be allowed to smoke - it's not politically correct.

  • Many thanks for making this available. One of Brett's better performances. Many early episodes are notorious for his shouting and overly theatrical style, but not here. Once he made the gradual transition from stage to film acting, there are many magical moments in the later episodes where the actor disappears and he seems to really become Holmes.

  • @Mosflow LOL. Before I saw the cigarette, I was like wtf... but then I saw it and the world made sense again. xD

  • @Offshoreorganbuilder I couldn't agree with you more!! Bravo!

  • Thanks for this posting, especially for including the full music and credits at the end. An excellent series, despite the nick-pickiing of some of the comments.

  • It's Thufier Howitt from DUNE!
