  • Well if something's popular and people really interested in something and it's useful than even if it's open can be potentially profitable. Such as MySpace for example and instant messengers and companies making use of Google Adsense to generate income via traffic when free accessible services are used. Convenience to developers and consumers equals wider distribution and high profit potential plus free advertising.
