Eerie, but at least we all know that mantas are gentle creatures. :)

The slits are their gills....it's not likely, but it's possible...but water is being pumped in and out, so probably not stuck for long

i have never seen one in person just small sting rays but i think that if i ever came as close as you did to one i would freak out lol i know they are harmless but just the size of them gives me the creeps

I had the crap scared out of me by a manta when I was about 5. Was out fishing with my dad and one came at the boat and swooped right underneath; it was as wide as the length of the boat, maybe bigger. When I asked my dad,he said it was a devil fish, so I was afraid he was gonna come back and turn the boat over. It's a shame this gentle creature ever got such a nickname.
