Much of this has the underpinnings of Japanese Koto drumming. I think he did this to honor the tradition of his host nation. He is a wonderfully gifted person.

@JSW588 the intro text was in korean and the announcer spoke korean. i'm neither korean or japanese but even i can tell the difference

well if you've ever seen the videos of when he was a kid, i dont think has any stage fright at all........... my best guess would be, is that the Japanese people asked him to start out the solo like that, just because thats how the japanese audience would prefer it :)

Ok Jesus Christ... Let me get this straight for you all. Tony was playing at a festival where, as you can see, a lot of old people were. Old people aren't impressed with crazy fast fills and intricate time signatures. He was entertaining the audience; that's what a real drummer does.
