I was going through some old videos recently, and came upon a few gems of Nathan running down Sand Dune Park. He had so much fun, you could hear him smiling! Most of them are from the late Spring, although there's one from the winter too. Watch these videos, and you can really understand what it is that kids love so much about the Manhattan Beach sand dune. Of course, I also have plenty of photos of kids & adults peacefully enjoying Sand Dune Park, but none have quite the same immediacy of the videos.
Sadly, the sand dune is currently closed, and the Manhattan Beach City Council may consider permanently closing the dune to kids forever at their January 27 meeting. If you're a kid or adult that enjoys the park, or if you think your kids may enjoy it someday, there are a few things you can do to help ensure that it remains open for future generations of kids and adults:
If you're a Manhattan Beach resident, please contact the city council and let them know how you feel. It's OK to be brief, just make sure you are polite and respectful, and let them know where in Manhattan Beach you live.
Everyone can get involved by visiting the Save the Sand Dune website, which is collecting input from supporters of re-opening the dune with the goal of mitigating the neighborhood impact.
If you're a blogger that cares about this issue, please write about your own experiences at Sand Dune Park, link to this blog as well as the unofficial Sand Dune Park website. Leave a comment here & I'll be sure to include to your blog entry on my next update.
