Most people enjoy making houses and feeders for songbirds. But you can also build a nesting box that will attract a screech owl.
You'll need wood...like this durable rough-sawn cedar nails and wood screws.
Following the directions, carefully measure and cut out the six pieces.
On the front piece of the box, cut a 3-inch diameter hole 9 to 12 inches above the bottom and drill four vent holes across the top.
On the bottom piece, cut a quarter-inch off each corner or drill four quarter-inch drainage holes.
And on the back piece of the box, attach a wood strip 4-inches from the top. Then assemble all the pieces except the .
Slide the top piece under the wood strip, and attach it to the front, using a wood screw.
To attract screech owls, mount the box 15 to 30 feet high in trees in the woods, along woodland edges or yards that have large trees.
This box can also be used to attract a sparrow hawk, or kestrel. All you have to do is change where you put it: kestrels prefer nesting sites in open or partially open land.
